FAQs

QUESTIONS ABOUT CABINETRY

Do you reface cabinets?
Yes we have lots of options for cabinet refacing, including stain, paint, antiquing as well as faux finishing options.

Are your cabinets custom made?
Yes, we custom build all our cabinets, however we can also install pre-fab cabinetry.

How high should my cabinets go, to the ceiling?
There is no rule for how high a cabinet goes. It is all preference and we can design your cabinets to tailor to your needs. However, the most common height for a kitchen’s upper cabinet is 4 1/2-feet (54-inches). This gives you adequate working room on your counter top with 18-inches of clearance between the two while still allowing easy access to the cabinets for the average height adult.

A height of 4 1/2-feet is optimal and the most ergonomic height for accessing the upper cabinets for anyone over 4-feet tall. Shorter people might need a step stool to reach the upper portion of the cabinet. Standard upper cabinets are 30-inches tall making the entirety of the cabinet easily accessible for 5-feet 8-inch tall people without a step stool. Upper cabinets are typically 12-inches deep. Anything deeper that that makes accessing the rear of the upper shelves more difficult.

What options do I have for organizing my utensils and kitchen items in the drawers?
We have catalogs full of great drawer organizers. Traditionally organizers use horizontal or vertical slots for utensils, but now there is another option of diagonal inserts. There are lots of options out there, and we can help you customize each drawer to your needs.

Can you put glass or other finishing touches on the cabinet doors?
Glass can be installed in any door. Glass doors on upper cabinets can add distinction and beauty to your kitchen. Order tempered glass only. Building codes do not require tempered glass in residential kitchens, but if eye-level cabinet glass breaks, you may suffer serious injury. Consider the organization of your household and your maintenance habits realistically. You and your guests will enjoy looking through clear glass doors at a neatly organized display of matching glassware and china. If you tend to let kitchen organization and maintenance slip from time to time, you may want to consider milk glass or frosted glass cabinet doors instead.

Does it cost more to have angles in my kitchen?
It is typical to allow 36” between appliances and cabinets for a comfortable work space. Based on your kitchen size and open square footage, your island can be customized based upon this recommended allowance.

Is hardwood a good choice for a kitchen floor where there is so much traffic & food?
Many homeowners remodeling their kitchens today are turning to an old flooring standby – wood. Wood flooring has made a major comeback as builders and homeowners look to increase the charm, value and comfort in new and remodeled homes. One reason for wood’s return to favor is the increasing prevalence of more open floor plans, in which kitchens and family rooms blend together. Wood floors offer a warm, seamless look for these “great room” designs. The better-engineered wood flooring available today is also a practical choice for kitchens. As long as you follow the routine maintenance recommendations of manufacturers, properly installed wood floors are durable, very easy to clean and tend to camouflage spills and tracked-in dirt.

QUESTIONS ABOUT CARPENTRY

Will larger mouldings shrink my rooms?
No, larger mouldings have the opposite effect. Crown will open the ceiling. Large baseboards with crown and a pop of color on the wall will open the room up. Allowing you to see a distinction between two points.

Why should moulding be painted after installation and not before?
Once mouldings are installed, the seems and nail holes need to be caulked, and painted for the most clean, finished look. If not painted, the non sealed caulk can shrink and crack over time. Temperature changes can effect the mouldings as they are made of MDF. Proper caulking can help prevent this from happening. Nailing pre-painted mouldings will show countless blemishes and is not recommended.

What if I have a vent in the way of where the moulding is to be installed?
There are 3 different solutions. Either of the 3 options below, typically, will not reduce air flow. This is more a personal preference. 1. We can return the crown next to the vent, 2. WE can notch the crown and go over the vent. 3. We can accent the crown with detail crossing over the vent. (not recommended but is a 3rd option)
